The Foreign Language Applications in the Multimedia Environment project (Project FLAME) developed interactive multimedia software for the foreign language classroom. The applications were developed to support and enhance foreign language and interdisciplinary learning. The project was led by Professor Edna Coffin of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. I was the primary engineer and educational technologist for the project.<\/p>\n

We developed four pedagogical models:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Teacher\u2019s Partner:<\/b>\u00a0Hardware \/ software approach to enhancing communicative activities from the front of the foreign language classroom<\/td>\nLearner\u2019s Partner:<\/b> Complementing the Teacher\u2019s Partner — interactive tutorial model for students working individually or in pairs<\/td>\nExploratory Mode:<\/b>\u00a0Understanding culture through art, literature, history, geography and folklore<\/td>\nCreative Mode:<\/b> Complement to the Exploratory Mode — Empowering students to author multimedia presentations<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Above is an example of the\u00a0Exploratory Mode from The Buried Mirror video series. This collection of multimedia apps focused on helping students\u00a0understand culture through art, literature, history, geography and folklore.<\/p>\n

This example shows how students could explore art such as this Diego Rivera mural. Students can pan through different sections of the mural on the left and click on highlighted areas to get more information about different parts of the artwork.<\/p>\n

In this Creative Mode example, students can use the\u00a0art gallery template to create their own multimedia report about a building, type of architecture or artwork.<\/p>\n
